Podcasts
It is hard to find time to sit down and listen without watching a screen too. We may no longer be stuck at home but there is plenty to do while listening to someone talk: working out, doing laundry, washing the dishes, cooking, or even during a long car ride! If you’re like me and have to take some notes to pay attention to, wake up, pour your coffee, grab a pen and paper, and press play.
Here are a few podcasts I recommend:
- “How I Built This” with Guy RaZ This podcast features CEOs and representatives from retail companies such as Spanx, Jo Malone, Lululemon, Athletica, Steve Madden, Outdoor Voices, Shopify, Zappos, Eileen Fisher, and Kendra Scott.
- Girlboss Radio’s “#Lipstories” podcast with Sophia Amoruso This podcast is unfused with girl power to the max- everything from how to be an entrepreneur, impressing your boss, and making it in the industry!
- “Girl Boss” by Debbie Sugrue This is another empowering podcast featuring female bosses and CEOs, explaining how to build connections, create your brand, and start your own business.
- LikeToKnowIt Influencer Radio If you don’t know Reward Style or LiketoKnowIt, they are companies that employ fashion and lifestyle influencers as well as social media bloggers. This podcast features its most successful influencers, even the CEO Amber Venz Box. Proudly headquartered in Dallas, TX, I enjoy being an influencer with the company!
- The BOF Podcast Anyone who is someone in this industry is featured on this podcast: supermodels, photographers, editors, designers, and retailers. Along with this, the top industry news is shared as well.
- “The Tech Edit” by Vogue Business Another great way to keep up with industry news is by listening to this podcast.
- Texintel Podcast This podcast explains everything you need to know about the textile industry.
- “Fashion Super-Intern” The fashion industry career coach Oggy Nikolova offers career advice as well as information about her amazing classes and portals, which are offered on theagencydelamode.com.
- “We Heard What” Danielle Bernstein gives you exclusive insight into how she started one of the most successful blogs. “We Wore What”, her overall life, and everything in between where she started and where she is now is shared in this podcast.
Books
I did include a recommended list of books in my last article, but I have found more! What I am currently reading now and cannot put down is Danielle Bernstein’s It’s Not a Fashion Story. I started it only a few days ago and am already more than halfway through. It is a must-read for anyone interested in starting a career in the fashion industry. Next on my list to read is Elizabeth Segran’s The Rocket Years: How Your Twenties Launch the Rest of Your Life. I discovered her on a “Fashinnovation” webinar and immediately ordered her book. I also watched a webinar with Elizabeth Segran and Rebecca Minkoff. I posted on my Instagram story, and Segran replied to my account. We had a lovely conversation, and we are also LinkedIn connections now. I just finished An Innocent Fashion by R.J. Hernandez. It was enjoyable, but in my opinion a little too long. I also have completed Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell, and that is a must-read. You will learn about some of the biggest strategic issues and debates, present and past. As a fashion major, it is important to be educated in history and present-day events. Another book still on my list is Love Style Life by Garance Doré.
Movies and Television
Something the media can always get right in the fashion industry is movies! Of course, we all know The Devil Wears Prada, Confessions of a Shopaholic, 27 Dresses, and America’s Next Top Model. Recently, Amazon Prime has everything you need from Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s, Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel, Halston, River Blue: Can Fashion Save the Planet, and more. My two favorites would be Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s and The Battle of Versailles. Learning about fashion history and the first in the industry is interesting to me. On Netflix, there is Madman: The Steve Madden Story, and Franca Chaos and Creation.
